My name is Andrea, and I’m a journalist and, now, a student again.

After three years of the news biz, I decided I wanted to go back to school. It wasn’t a journalism program that spurred me to get my masters — none of the ones I looked at promised to give me the grounding I wanted that would allow me to continue putting solid, unbiased information onto the page.

Instead, it was a brand new program — a masters in food systems at the University of Vermont — that sent me careening through the application process, seeking out recommendations, scraping together an application fee and, reluctantly, retrieving a mediocre GRE score report that I’d hoped never have to see again.

Fast forward six months and here I am, settled into a new apartment just down the hill from campus (on the Winooski side, in case you were wondering).

It’s been a whirlwind first three weeks, which is why I’m only now getting around to this blog, which has been on my mind since well before day one.

While I’m in grad school, it will be a way to collect my thoughts about schoolwork, home cookin’ and the city of gastronomic delight that is Burlington and its environs. I’ll also feature the writing I’m doing — food and agriculture-related, of course!

After that, who knows.
